Forks & The Road: Santa Monica’s surfing chefs

Santa Monica is known as the birthplace of beach volleyball, the skate board capital of the U.S. and has a permanent amusement park on its pier with a Ferris wheel that almost drops into the ocean. Given the surroundings, it’s not surprising that it also has surfing chefs whose talents in the kitchen combine with a prowess on the water.

There are over 400 restaurants in the 8.3 square miles that make up SanMo, and among such competition Chef Josiah Citrin stands out. His restaurant Mélisse has two Michelin stars and multiple awards including Forbes Travel Guide 2013 “one of the finest five star properties in the world”.  Lucky hotel guests at the newly refurbished Oceana Beach Club can now experience a lighter version of his cuisine at the hotel’s Tower 8 restaurant.
